The day will end with a performance by the Voices Spoken Word Ensemble, highlighting the voices of athletes who have challenged barriers of class, race, gender and religion over the past 100 years. In addition to the full membership, OLLI offers a “Brown Bag” level, which allows members to access one-time presentations on various topics, many of which are offered as video conferences, as well as live in Boston. The fall curriculum includes “Becoming America: 1776-1800,” “Masters of Italy,” “Social and Cultural Aspects of Food & Cuisine,” “On the Home Front: American Society During World War II,” “Shakespeare’s King Lear,” and “You Bet Your Sweet Assets: Economics in a Changing Society,” just to name a few. “As a member of OLLI, they can also take advantage of travel, plays, and things at other campuses.” “We have so many retired community members who want to thrive,” she said. Janelle D’Aprix, Adult Education Coordinator for the Community School, explained that when the school began its partnership with ReMain, the board expressed an interest in lifelong learning. On Nantucket, at the Community School’s downtown facility at 56 Centre Street, upcoming classes, in video conference format, will be beamed in live from Boston, with a classroom camera that provides the ability to interact with the instructors. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at the University of Massachusetts Boston is membership based, and provides non-credit courses, lectures, social events, theatre, and travel in the U.S., and abroad, to its community of mature learners.
